Dying to redecorate but have no idea how to begin? Get a free interior design consultation from Old City shop owner and namesake Matthew Izzo during his massive Summer Sample Sale. “If people purchase online, they can e-mail photos of their space and I’ll make suggestions,” Izzo says. “If they buy in the store, they’ll get a one-hour consultation with delivery.” All floor samples are 20 percent to 70 percent off — including gorgeous pieces from Gus Modern — so even the recession-afflicted can’t afford to miss this one.
What is your best design tip for people on a tight budget?
People always over-decorate, so don’t clutter the space. Keep it simple. Buy less furniture but invest in nicer quality pieces. Also, buy local art by young artists. Spend your money on original art instead of some cardboard thing from Ikea.
What do you recommend for people with small spaces?
Measure carefully! Always measure your space and the furniture before you make a purchase. A good tip is to use blue painter’s tape to mark where furniture would sit on the floor so you can see how big it will be in the space. And, of course, you should consult a professional — like me!
Name one home accessory that you think everyone should have right now.
I’m really crazy about the Capiz lighting on our website right now. It has a nice little sparkle to it and it’s a really beautiful design. I think everyone should have one really nice piece of lighting.
What’s your favorite item currently in the store?
I really love the Jane sectional sofas [by Gus Modern]. They have beautiful mid-century styling and come in really pretty fabrics. They’re nicely proportioned. I love the Gus Modern stuff that’s currently on sale. When I redecorate my home, I’m going to buy some of those pieces.
