The newest member of the RCMP canine unit was given the royal treatment yesterday when Prince Edward gave the future explosives detector as a gift to the force on behalf of the Queen.

Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, presented the force with Suzanna, a 16-month-old yellow Labrador retriever, during the RCMP awards ceremony at Fort Calgary.

“We hope you’ll enjoy Suzanna and hope she fits in and becomes a mascot and becomes recognized,” Prince Edward said, adding the gift was part of a longstanding tradition with the RCMP.

Dog trainer Cpl. Alex Mann said Suzanna is an energetic dog with drive and should finish eight weeks of training in anticipation of becoming an explosives detector for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. “She is going to get the same treatment as every one of our dogs get,” Mann said.
