Alberta’s inmate population is growing.

A Solicitor General’s report says the number of people in provincial jails is projected to grow by 23 per cent over the next five years.

More than 58 per cent of Alberta’s inmate population is in custody awaiting trial.

The report also says inmates need more supervision due to physical and mental health problems.

As well, the report says many have gang connections, which can stir up trouble.
