Proposed airport tunnel at centre of meeting tonight

A Calgary alderman hopes a public meeting about the future closure of Barlow Trail tonight will remind citizens about the importance of a proposed airport tunnel.

Ward 3 Ald. Jim Stevenson said the town hall meeting tonight will outline the progress of a proposed airport tunnel in light of the Barlow Trail road closure in March, 2011. “It’s a meeting to remind Calgarians about the impending closure and to make them aware about how serious it is if there is no tunnel for alternative use,” Stevenson said.

The proposed tunnel would ensure access to the Calgary International Airport once the new strip is built, he added.

“We also want to update the public about a number of new items and to let them know the progress we made and what to do next.”

Ward 12 Ald. Ric McIver said it’s important the city has a second way to access and exit the airport.

Mayor Dave Bronconnier will also speak at the meeting at 7 p.m. at the Sheraton Cavalier.
