Nathan Tomagatick grew up in his great-grandmother’s crowded house in Attawapiskat, Ont., where bugs and rats would occasionally pay his bed a visit.

Things got so bad two months ago, he and his mother, Maria, who had lived in that home all 30 years of her life, moved to Timmins.

Yesterday, the Tomagaticks joined 48 other community members in a protest outside the De Beers Canada office in Toronto. The demonstrators expressed their mounting frustration over what they believe to be an unequal distribution of profit generated from the company’s diamond mine on traditional Attawapiskat lands.

“We (have) no nice house ... there are lots of mice and holes,” said Nathan, 10, as he stood outside the building with a cardboard sign.
