Province announces new commitments to fight homelessness

Wayne Stewart is leading the charge to end homelessness.

As the newly appointed Chair of the Alberta Secretariat for Action on Homelessness, he will be in charge of the government’s ten-year plan to deal with the issue.

“In Calgary it’s going up. There is no question it is going up,” he said.

However, Stewart does promise progress. The province has earmarked $32 million — nearly half of which is for Calgary — to be spent this year on outreach programs, and a further $100 million on affordable housing.

“If we can maintain that commitment, and it will be up to you, me and every citizen in the province, we’ll end homelessness.”
