Province’s homicide hits new high

Alberta has never before seen more homicides than in 2008.

Last year, 53 people were murdered in the province, a figure that nearly doubles 2007’s rate, when 23 people were killed.

Of all the murders committed in 2008, seven were on the Hobbema reserve, a community with a meagre population of 12,000.

Statistics released yesterday from the Edmonton RCMP show that 14 of the murders resulted from domestic violence.

The RCMP consider 77 per cent of the homicides to be solved, in that, charges have been sworn, said RCMP Cpl. Wayne Oakes.
