Province seeks input on hospital transition

The provincial government has said it will assemble a committee of representatives from mental health and patient advocate sectors to guide its planned transition of Alberta Hospital patients to community-based care.

The announcement came one day after hundreds of protesters marched against planned bed closures and cutbacks at the mental health facility.

Up to 246 beds will reportedly start closing as soon as Dec. 1.

Edmonton-Rutherford MLA Fred Horne, who will serve as Stelmach’s designate, said the premier wants to “take a pause.”

“The premier wants to make sure we do this right,” Horne said.

The committee is a natural evolution of the transition process, said Alberta Health and Wellness spokesperson Andy Weiler.
