People receiving employment insurance in Alberta continues to grow as 61,000 people received beneficiaries in June according to Statistics Canada, which is an increase of 9.4 per cent from May.

Alberta showed the largest increase of out any Canadian province.

Other provinces seeing high numbers of growth are British Columbia, 5.5 per cent, Ontario, 3 per cent, and Saskatchewan, 2.1 per cent.

From June 2008 to June 2009, Albertans collecting employment insurance increased by 263 per cent.

During this same period, Alberta’s unemployment rate grew from 3.7 per cent to 6.8 per cent. This is still below the national level of 8.6 per cent.

The average percentage of people claiming EI beneficiaries in Canada increased by 5 per cent from May to June.
