The number of tickets and warnings issued to campers over the May long weekend were up this year, with more RCMP and other provincial enforcement agencies helping to crack down on violators.

“We now have a new understanding working with (provincial agencies) and the idea is that we can get the locations that are causing problems,” said Sgt. Patrick Webb of the RCMP.

Webb said that more people are targeting the McLean Creek area, especially backcountry camping.

“What people are doing now, so they can party more, are moving further back into the wilderness areas. We are able to get in there and do more enforcement.”

Webb said the one upside this weekend is that there were no serious injuries resulting from any of the incidents.

“We can attribute some of that to advice we were giving out ahead of time,” Webb said, such as staying in the designated areas.

Out of the seven RCMP districts that border the Foothills, Cochrane had the most number of tickets and warnings given out with 891, according to police.

Webb said that this kind of enforcement will not be happening every weekend.
