It’s bound to become an amazing anecdote about things that go bump in the night.

A criminal, while in the middle of robbing a house in Hamilton, New Zealand, in the early morning on June 19, was trespassing in the darkness when he suddenly stumbled into an unexpected shape. It turned out to be the body of a hanging victim, still strung from the ceiling.

The New Zealand Herald reported that the “terrified” robber then promptly dialed the police, and waited for them to arrive. Cops speculate that he may have turned himself in for the robbery to avoid any potential affiliation with the death. However, his screams had already alerted the neighbors that something was amiss.

“I’m hopeful that this may be a career-changing moment for that burglar. I dare say for the burglar — if we remove the criminality of what he was doing — it would be really shocking,” said the city’s commander inspector, who recounts that he’d seen nothing like this “unusual incident” in his 28 years on the force.

As if recounting an allegorical cautionary tale, rather than a real-life crime that recently took place, he added: “Can you imagine what that would be like in the dark?”

Both the robbery and the hanging are currently being investigated by Hamilton, New Zealand, police.
