Prudential Steel workers evacuated after oil pit fire

Approximately 50 workers were evacuated from the Prudential Steel’s property in Calgary’s southeast Monday morning after a fire in an oil pit, the fire department said.

Firefighters responded to a call to the facility in the 8900 block of Barlow Trail SE, shortly after 9:30 a.m. Upon arrival, they found the company had already initiated a shut down of the area.

The fire department believes the fire started in a 15-foot deep pit that had an inch of oil covering the bottom.

Smoke immediately filled the building and the company attempted to ventilate the area with the use of oversized fans, the fire department said.

Cause of the blaze is not yet determined and a damage estimate is unavailable at this time.
