Questions raised over new light-rail transit proposal

Asking about the over/under on Edmonton’s proposed LRT route to St. Albert could mean many things. Will it go over or under CN Rail lines? Or what are commuters betting this will even get done in the foreseeable future?

What seems certain is the corridor chosen for the proposed route, which will depart from NAIT and follow 113A Street to 153 Avenue, and then head west to St. Albert where a park-and-ride is planned.

Beyond that, it’s a whole lot of hypothetical. The project is estimated at $1.1 billion, but with no timetable when the project will get off the ground as priority seems to be attached to western and southern extensions at the moment.

“It’s a long process to get to that level of detail,” explained Adam Laughlin, director of facility and capital planning.

A statutory public hearing will take place on June 22 before the proposal goes before council.
