R.E.M. bass player Mike Mills, left, and singer Michael Stipe, perform on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno last October.

R.E.M. will join the Spice Girls, U2 and The Police as the latest mega-rock band to begin their tour in Metro Vancouver.

The band from Athens, Ga., will open their North American tour at Deer Lake in Burnaby on May 23. Modest Mouse and the National will open the show.

The tour, which includes a second Canadian show in Toronto on June 8, is in support of their upcoming album Accelerate, scheduled for release April 1. Its release will be preceded by the single Supernatural Serious.

The tour includes stops in Chicago and New York City, and concludes June 21 in Atlanta.

R.E.M. was reportedly in Vancouver briefly last spring when the group came to town for recording sessions with producer Jacknife Lee.
