A man allegedly assaulted by off-duty police officers said his attackers hurled racist remarks as they beat him.

A man allegedly assaulted by off-duty police officers said his attackers hurled racist remarks as they beat him.

Officers from the Delta, New Westminster and West Vancouver police departments were arrested early Wednesday morning outside the Vancouver Hyatt for allegedly assaulting and robbing Firoz (Phil) Khan.

Khan, 47, a newspaper deliveryman from Surrey, said his attackers said “We don’t like brown people” as they beat him.

On Friday, Vancouver police Chief Jim Chu took the unusual step of commenting on the investigation “for the sake of preserving the public’s respect” and said the VPD was “aggressively investigating” the assault.

Two of the officers involved have been assigned to desk or administrative duties. A third has been suspended with pay.
