Who doesn't love when that Snapchat badge appears on your phone, forcing us to wait anxiously for the dancing ghost to stop his moves, signaling that our recently received picture has loaded — except, of course, when it’s an unexpected penis just as you are mentally preparing to race in an international swimming event.
That's exactly what happened when Dominic Harvey, morning radio host of “The Edge” in New Zealand, accidentally sent a picture of his genitals to multiple gold-medalist Paralympian Sophie Pascoe.
He had intended the image for his co-host, Sophie Hallwright. But is that really any better?
Pascoe, who was preparing for her race, tweeted, “Just finished eating dinner and opened Snapchat. #awkward surprise.”
Apparently, though, it didn't shake her up too much — she then went on to claim the gold in the 100m freestyle event in record-breaking time.
Who knows, maybe Harvey’s surprise added some fuel to her fire?
Issuing an apology to Pascoe, Harvey played on her involvement with farming industry Beef + Lamb New Zealand when he said, "So sorry about that Snapchat. I know you like beef and lamb ... but nobody deserves a surprise pork sausage.”
In his own defense, Harvey later tweeted, “Not sure how it's news. Nobody involved is offended or upset. I'm in no employment trouble. It's a non-story.”
His program director, Leon Wratt, defended him saying, “No one feels stupider than Dom himself but he has apologized. No disciplinary action is planned.”
So maybe this can be a lesson to all of us that with the unpredictability of Snapchat, we should be careful where we open these images — you know, just in case you are surprised with a picture of Harvey’s penis — even if it does inspire you to complete your work in record-breaking time.
