Rainmen select big man in PBL draft

The Halifax Rainmen selected six-foot-10 centre Aaron Spears with the sixth overall pick in the Premier Basketball League draft last night in Chicago.

Spears played four seasons at the NCAA Division I level, spending two at Illinois and two at St. John’s from 2002 to 2007.

“They want me to be a down-low presence,” Spears said on the draft webcast. “Play hard, rough, and rebound the ball.”

His best college season, in 2006-07, saw him average 7.2 points and 3.0 rebounds in 26 games.

With their second pick, 14th overall, the Rainmen took six-foot-seven forward Kyle Cuffe, who also played college ball at St. John’s. Cuffe, from Bronx, N.Y., averaged 9.2 points and 6.2 rebounds in two NCAA seasons.
