Rally for health care taken to legislature

The fall sitting of the Alberta legislature started yesterday to the chants of Albertans angry about cuts to health care.

As sign-wielding protestors gathered on the steps of the legislature, protest organizer Karen Sevcik emphatically decried the underfunding of public health care.

“I think that the government is systematically setting the public health care system up for failure so that people are ripe to the idea of for-profit, private industry coming in,” Sevcik said.

“I would really like to see us draw the line and say, ‘We are not going to give up. We are going to look after sick people in this country and province like the Canada Health Act said we would.’”

Echoing the words of Sevcik, Dr. Dave Swann, leader of the official Opposition, commented on the protest. “We can demand the premier and the minister and members be accountable for the wasteful spending they have made and the lack of leadership on health care,” he said.
