RCMP have ‘person of interest’ in baby-napping

Mounties in Sherwood Park are on the trail of a teenager police said was a person of interest in the kidnapping of a five-month-old baby Tuesday afternoon.

“A person of interest has been identified — it’s a male youth,” Strathcona County RCMP Const. Wally Henry said Wednesday afternoon. “We’re following up on that lead right now. Nobody has been arrested yet.”

Police haven’t released a description of the teenager.

“Investigators have been out of the office working on it non-stop,” Henry said.

The baby boy was found safe in the abandoned vehicle, left in an alley near 117 Street and 98 Avenue two hours after it was stolen from the parking lot of Westboro Elementary School. “It’s believed to be random at this point, there’s nothing to lead us to believe it’s targeted,” Henry said.
