RCMP seize millions of contraband cigarettes

The RCMP seized 3.45 million contraband cigarettes in Ottawa following a search warrant late last week.

The organization said Tuesday it conducted searches at an apartment on Montfort Street and various storage facilities located on Parisien Street, Canotek Road and Sieveright Avenue, where they seized 345 cases of contraband cigarettes, a small quantity of drugs, as well as four vehicles that were allegedly used to used to transport the contraband cigarettes in and around the National Capital Region.

Police have charged a city man with one count of possession of a tobacco product not properly stamped and one count of possession of a substance under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

Richard Cardinal, 50, faces several charges and imprisonment for up to five years. He next appears in court Dec. 8.

The investigation is ongoing.
