Realtor faces fine for cooking books

A Hammonds Plains realtor was fined more than $25,000 after fudging the numbers in her business expenses.

Bea MacDonald pleaded guilty to three charges of tax evasion in Halifax Provincial Court Tuesday. Investigations proved that she claimed nearly $68,000 worth of false business expenses on her 2004 and 2005 tax returns.

After being approached by the Canada Revenue Agency in 2006, MacDonald attempted to clear her name by having invoices reissued by a vendor, leaving out her real estate partner’s name.

She also took the time to alter more than 100 receipts so she could disguise personal expenses as business.
