Red light runners, restraint use on police radar in April

Police are cracking down on red light runners and those who fail to use seatbelts or comply with child car seat requirements next month.

Ottawa public health nurses and police will be setting up roadside spot checks throughout April. The inspections will ensure that all vehicle occupants are wearing their seatbelts, and booster and child car seats are suitable and properly installed.

From 2004 to 2008, 24 people were killed and more than 400 injured in Ottawa as a result of not wearing vehicle restraints.

In 2008, there were four deaths and 375 injuries due to drivers failing to stop at red lights.
