Regional rail hubs must get priority: Councillor

Waterfront Station and other downtown Vancouver rail hubs will need to grow in coming years — and other city development decisions should not get in their way, said Vancouver Coun. Geoff Meggs.

At Tuesday’s Council meeting, Meggs said he’ll propose that the city ask higher levels of government, Metro Vancouver and TransLink to consider that it is in Vancouver’s best economic interest to invest in the rail hubs.

The proposal was spurred by Amtrak’s Cascades rail service, which has been promised $600 million by the U.S. government to raise rail traffic between Portland, Seattle and the Vancouver hub.

“Vancouver’s in a great position to benefit from possible future high-speed rail investments,” Meggs said. “I want to make sure that the city doesn’t lose an opportunity down the road to allow investment in this kind of sustainable transportation.”
