Physical activity can bring you many health benefits. Regular exercise can help reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke, high blood pressure, non-insulin-dependent diabetes, obesity, back pain and osteoporosis. Regular physical activity may also help in improving your mood and in helping you to better manage stress. For the greatest overall health benefits, experts recommend that you accumulate 30 to 60 minutes of light-moderate physical activity a day.
However, if you are unable to do this sustained level of activity, you can gain substantial health benefits by adding in periods of activity of at least 10 minutes each throughout your day.
"Choose a variety of different activities to improve your endurance, your flexibility and your strength," says Catherine Statton, program coordinator for the Diabetes Exercise and Healthy Lifestyle Program at Toronto Rehab, Canada's largest provider of adult rehabilitation services.
Catherine recommends trying these various activities: Walking, dancing, golf, cycling, gardening, swimming, yoga, stretching, T'ai Chi and resistive or weight training exercises.
