Police Chief Jim Chu’s decision to release a memo describing the video from the police shooting of a homeless man was a “serious error of judgment,” says Vancouver lawyer David Eby.
The memo was released to the department and corroborates testimony from officers involved in the shooting of Michael Vann Hubbard on March 20.
“The release of this memo … shows exactly why evidence like this should be handled by civilian investigators, not the police,” said Eby, with the B.C. Civil Liberties Association. “This videotape description, independent of its accuracy, was distributed apparently without concern for influencing internal or external witness statements.”
