Remnants of Danny bring wind, rain to Newfoundland after soaking Maritimes

HALIFAX, N.S. – Forecasters say the remnants of post-tropical storm Danny will pass over Newfoundland Sunday, drenching southern and western portions of the island.

The Canadian Hurricane Centre says Danny was absorbed Saturday into a larger area of low pressure, but moisture associated with the system will bring between 50 and 80 millimetres of rain to the province.

RCMP are advising transport trucks to avoid the notoriously windy Wreckhouse area, where winds are gusting up to 140 kilometres an hour.

Const. David Thorne says two camping trailers being towed by vehicles toppled over while travelling through the area Sunday, but there were no injuries.

The Maritimes, meanwhile, are drying out after Danny dumped buckets of rain on the region Saturday, causing some flooding and power outages.

In Saint John, N.B., a number of roads have been closed and at least 50 basements flooded after more than 100 millimetres of rain fell on the city.
