How many Toronto Hydro workers does it take to inspect a handwell? Two: One to do most of the work, and another to be there in case the first gets electrocuted.

Toronto Hydro’s handwell inspection and repair campaign was in full swing yesterday, when crews got to work checking each of the city’s 15,000 handwells for faulty wiring. Several GTA residents, including a group of 10- and 11-year-old students, as well as a number of dogs, two of which died, have been zapped by the handwells since November.

The handwells — which sit in the ground and provide power to street lights, TTC shelters and other street fixtures — are covered by metal plates that can become electrified when the wiring below malfunctions.
