Report looks at signs for ‘safety zones’

Those familiar yellow signs marking playground or school zones in Calgary could be replaced by uniform “safety zone” signs.

Yesterday at council’s land use committee meeting, Ald. Gord Lowe moved that a report be written about the implications of combining school and playground zones into one uniform “safety zone” that could include areas such as sports fields.

“It could be achieved quite easily,” Lowe said, adding the proposed zones could have standardized hours such as 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Ald. Andre Chabot and Ald. John Mar opposed the motion. “If it’s not broken, why fix it?” Mar said, adding that it would be “an enforcement nightmare.”

The report is due back in September.
