Residents of a 14-storey apartment building in the city's south end were evacuated after a kitchen fire early Thursday.

Firefighters attended a sixth-floor apartment of 2870 Cedarwood Dr. at around 12:15 p.m., said Ottawa District Fire Chief Monty Malloy.

Thirty-six firefighters with 15 fire trucks arrived at the scene to find heavy smoke on the sixth floor, said Malloy.

"We did a fast extinguishment of the fire, but the smoke emanated throughout the building," he said.

The residents were evacuated while firefighters ventilated the building.

There were no injuries and no estimates for the smoke damage.
