Thirty people left homeless by a fire in Halifax Tuesday have been told it could be weeks before they are able to return to their apartments.
The tenants, who lived in 18 different units inside or adjacent to a 100-year-old South Street building engulfed by flames Tuesday morning, have all found temporary places to stay with friends or relatives, said a release issued by the Canadian Red Cross yesterday.
Three apartments were completely destroyed in the fire, and the others will require extensive repair work that could take several weeks, the release said.
Four restaurants were also forced to close their doors, affecting more than 30 full- and part-time workers. Those include Taj Mahal, Thai Chin, Tomasino’s and Café Chianti.
The Red Cross said it helped eight people with emergency replacement clothing and other basic necessities in the immediate aftermath of the blaze, which broke out around 8 a.m. Tuesday morning.
No one was injured, and the cause of fire remains under investigation.
