Retracing Bellemore’s last steps

Search and rescue volunteers found Mitchel Bellemore’s body in a clearing surrounded by woods just 250 metres away from where he was last seen four days earlier.

RCMP spokesman Cpl. Joe Taplin said a search team found the boy’s body around 10:30 p.m., in an area just southeast of Atholea Drive and Caldwell Road.

Investigators are still trying to determine what happened last Friday night before and after Mitchel was last seen around 10:30 p.m., knocking on the door of an acquaintance on Atholea Drive.

“We’re trying to piece his steps together and why he ended up in there,” Taplin said.

Although the cause of Bellemore’s death has not yet been released, family and friends speculate he died of hypothermia.

The night he disappeared was one of the season’s last blasts of winter, with temperatures dropping below freezing, combined with a slushy snowstorm.

He said an autopsy was performed on the boy’s body and a preliminary report from the medical examiner would likely be released today.
