Riggers ready for playoffs

By his standards, Kaleb Toth has had a sub-par season with the Calgary Roughnecks.

The veteran forward can put all that behind him if the Roughnecks beat the Colorado Mammoth tomorrow night (7 p.m.) in Denver in the opening round of the National Lacrosse League playoffs.

“It’s a brand new season going into playoffs,” said Toth, whose 19 goals and 31 assists in 15 games were his lowest totals in seven seasons as a Roughneck. “It doesn’t matter what anyone did in the regular season.”

This season, Toth has battled through a pulled hamstring and a knee injury and was even benched for a game at home on Feb. 24 when the Roughnecks beat the Mammoth 12-9.

The assistant captain was in the lineup for a 10-9 loss to the Mammoth in Denver on Dec. 29 and an 11-6 loss at the Saddledome on March 15 and would like nothing better than to eliminate Colorado from playoff contention.

“You can’t hold anything back,” he said. “It’s a one-game elimination.”

While the Roughnecks won their final three games to finish with a 7-9 record, the Mammoth lost three of their final five contests to end up in second in the West Division at 9-7.

“I definitely think we’ve got the momentum,” Toth said. “I think we’ve got a great chance.”
