Rise in sex assault stats inflated: Police

The increase in sexual assaults is less than half the alarming 21.2 per cent touted last month in their annual report, Vancouver police said yesterday.

Police assert that the number of reported and founded incidents rose 9.6 per cent in the first eight months of 2010.

“We want to make sure people are aware of when and how many crimes of this type are happening,” said Const. Lindsey Houghton.

Of the 360 sex assaults reported to the VPD, 58 were “historical” (they were reported between January and August, but occurred earlier) and 29 involved incidents where the victim was not truthful.
