The statistics tell an unfortunate reality — aboriginals, and more specifically aboriginal youth, are taking their own lives at a rate much higher than outside of reserves.
A new program called River of Life on display at the Assembly of First Nations aims to address the issue.
Plans are for it to be delivered on a national level and according to its designers, the concept is different because its curriculum was developed by First Nations for First Nations.
“It’s built in a way that they can take aspects of the program and make it relevant, they can take the model itself and make it relevant to their own community,” said consultant Suzanne McLeod
Delegates are looking at including River of Life as part of a national suicide prevention program.
