A proposal made by Mayor Gregor Robertson to get around 550 homeless people off the streets and into subsidized housing by the end of the year was taken to Vancouver city council yesterday.

The plan is to immediately create hundreds of interim housing units at city- or government-owned sites, or through leases with single-room occupancy hotels, and fund them for five years.

“This is the boldest step yet from the city to aggressively deal with homelessness,” said Mayor Gregor Robertson. “The city is pulling out all the stops to get people off the street and into housing before next winter.”

Robertson said it’s now up to the province and private sector to help get the project off the ground.
