Avoid the headache of gardening and bring some Zen to your own backyard with careful planting, specific stone choices and the creation of your own rock garden.
Derek Stearns and Dean Marsico are the hosts of Rock Solid on DIY Network Canada.
These stonemasons regularly tackle masonry projects for the yard and home — whether it’s fixing a front step or creating a backyard fire pit.
Rock your world
You need to select the stone you will be using, keeping in mind to choose a variety of large and small boulders, flat stones, coloured river bed stones and flagstone.
When installing the stones, begin with the largest and heaviest.
Use crowbars and stone shims to roll these boulders into place, creating a footing so they look natural rather than sitting on ground level.
Pick plants that are suitable to your local climate to complete the design of the rock garden.
Remember to choose multiple textures and colours to create an interesting aesthetic.
Once you’re ready to plant, work down the landscape and scatter the various colours and textures amongst the entire space.
Walk the walk
The final touch is to create a stepping stone area through the garden that can be used to weed, water, and stroll.
Begin by placing the stones in their desired location, then trace the outline of stones with a shovel.
Remove the stone and dig out a footing before replacing it.
Lastly, add mulch to the entire area around rocks, plants and your walkway to decorate, retain water and prevent weeds.
