A University-area watering hole has been ordered to evict mice from its kitchen, or close the doors for good.
The Windsor Pub (11712 – 87 Ave.) was issued a closure order Jan. 28, after a Capital Health inspector found deplorable conditions in the kitchen, where rodents had allegedly been scurrying about.
“It’s very serious,” said executive officer Mystique Wendel, who inspected the restaurant. “Mice have a tendency to look for food, so they can scurry across food contact surfaces like cutting boards and countertops without your eye even seeing it.”
Wendel said though no illnesses related to the pub were reported, rodents carry diseases, like the deadly Hantavirus, that pose a risk to humans.
In addition to finding mice feces under equip-ment and on food surfaces, she said the kitchen floor was littered with food debris and refuse. She noted a lack of hot water for sterilizing dishes or hand-washing, and the unmistakable smell of rotting food in a walk-in cooler.
The pub had until Feb. 7 to appeal the decision.
Windsor Pub staff did not return calls from Metro yesterday.
