Royal visit jam-packed

The Royal Couple have a packed schedule for the three days they’re in Halifax later this month.

An itinerary for the June 28 to 30 visit by Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh was announced yesterday in Ottawa.

“The 2010 visit is celebrating the Canadian record of service,” said Kevin MacLeod, Canadian secretary to the Queen. “It also enables Canadians to honour and celebrate the Queen. The Queen is now in her 58th year as Queen of Canada, and in two years we’ll be marking the Diamond Jubilee reign.”

The royal flight touches down at Halifax Stanfield International Airport just after 2 p.m. on Monday, June 28.

From there, the Royal Couple will arrive at Garrison Grounds in downtown Halifax, where thousands of people are expected to attend.

There, the Queen will give the first speech of this Canadian tour and go on a walkabout through the crowd. The prime minister, premier, lieutenant governor, and several other dignitaries will be in attendance.

During their three-day visit, the Royal Couple will unveil several plaques, plant a tree, attend receptions and rededicate Government House.

These events will “offer a rare opportunity to be a part of history. This is only the fifth time the Royal Couple have toured Nova Scotia, and the first since 1994,” said Premier Darrell Dexter in a release yesterday.

The Queen will also visit a Mi’kmaq village set up on the Common for Membertou 400.

“The fact that the Queen is taking time to be with us is going to mean a great deal to all of us,” said Sister Dorothy Moore, a Mi’kmaq educator.

They will board a ship on June 29 to inspect a number of ships assembled for the International Fleet Review. That night, they’ll meet with Nova Scotians who have made significant impacts in their communities during a reception at the Cunard Centre.

They’ll have time to plant a tree on June 30 before they’re off to Ottawa for the next leg of their Canadian tour.
