David Williams, spokesman for Ladbrokes, the U.K.’s largest betting company weighs in on the upcoming royal nuptials.
People seemed to guess the announcement was coming, didn’t they?
They were betting on it and in the past couple of weeks the betting
volume increased significantly. We thought the announcement would come,
too, but not this soon, and didn’t adjust our rates. Now we have to
give betters £5 for every £1 they bet. Congratulations to the public
for spotting the news.
Which other royal events are people betting on?
Betting on the royal
family is nothing new. People bet on Prince Charles’s engagement to
Camilla Parker-Bowles. But this is the biggest royal betting story of
all time. People are betting on where the wedding will be, which
designer will design Kate’s dress, where the couple will go on
honeymoon, whether Prince Harry will be the best man, and everything
in between. I can’t think of any other wedding where the dress would
receive this kind of attention.
How does the betting volume compare to the World Cup?
Much smaller. But
the people who’re betting on the royal wedding are a completely
different demographic group.
