Russell accepts role of assistant coach

Cam Russell will remain behind the Halifax Mooseheads’ bench.

Russell, who was pushed out of his job as head coach last week when majority owner Bobby Smith took over those duties, decided yesterday to accept Smith’s offer to remain as an assistant coach.

“We both agreed this was the best thing for the team,” Smith said. “He’s going to have plenty of responsibility and plenty of input.”

Russell, who also continues as general manager, will miss today’s 7 p.m. home tilt against the Gatineau Olympiques but will join the Mooseheads on the road Friday against the P.E.I. Rocket.

Chris Donnelly remains in his role as associate coach while assistant coach Jason Troini will move to the press box because “four is too many behind the bench,” according to Smith.

Russell, a former NHL blue-liner who won 117 of 290 games as a head coach over more than four seasons, will work primarily with the team’s defence corps and penalty-killing unit.
