Russell preparing to make big cut for camp roster

There’s a cut — a very large cut — coming on Saturday morning at Halifax Mooseheads training camp.

Mooseheads general manager Cam Russell said Thursday night he could trim as many as 25 players from his rather bulky 59-man training camp roster before the team opens the QMJHL pre-season on Saturday on Prince Edward Island.

“We could be down to 35 or so,” Russell said.

Ultimately, Russell intends to carry either 23 or 24 players, and he’s starting to whittle down his list. He said he’s already noticing players “a little tired, a little lethargic.”

“We want to push these guys, test them,” he said. “You see good things, you see bad things, you see guys who are fatigued, guys who can push through it, guys who can’t.”
