Russian submarine commanders have aggressively stepped up challenges to NATO in the North Atlantic in what defense sources described yesterday as a return to Cold War tactics.

Specially upgraded versions of Russia’s Akula class subs have spent months stalking American, French and British nuclear submarines in an attempt to record their sonar signatures — the unique sound each submarine makes underwater that identifies them exactly.

A source in the British navy told the Telegraph newspaper yesterday: “The Russians have been playing games with us, the Americans and French in the North Atlantic.”

The newspaper said it had been played a recording of the sonar signature of an Akula sub that had been stalking one of the UK’s Trident-carrying nuclear subs in recent months.
