A Saint Mary’s University professor made the short list for the Scotiabank Giller Prize yesterday.

A Saint Mary’s University professor made the short list for the Scotiabank Giller Prize yesterday.

A collection of short stories by Alexander MacLeod, 38, called Light Lifting is one of five books on the list.

The competition started with 98 books from every region of the country.

The other finalists are: David Bergen for his novel The Matter with Morris; Sarah Selecky for her short-story collection This Cake is for the Party; Johanna Skibsrud for her novel The Sentimentalists; and Kathleen Winter for her novel Annabel.

The winner will receive $50,000 and the four finalists will be given $5,000 each.

The winner will be announced at a Toronto gala on Nov. 9.
