Highly paid Ontario government bureaucrats will no longer have their salaries “buried away” in hospital budgets to skirt public scrutiny, Premier Dalton McGuinty said yesterday, bowing to opposition pressure following a Torstar News Service exposé on the practice.

McGuinty acknowledged that the habit “offends the spirit” of the province’s salary disclosure law and that bureaucrats will now be listed under the ministry where they work.

Torstar detailed the questionable practice two weeks ago. And while Deputy Premier George Smitherman initially defended the practice McGuinty agreed “burying” the salaries was questionable, but noted both the NDP and PC party did it while in power.
