Sales keep on rollin’, wheels keep on turnin’

Although the automotive industry is in a slump, car sales kept on rolling at the Edmonton Motor Show this weekend in the Northlands AgriCom.

“If people want to buy a car, then they’re going to buy a car,” said Tarah Fardy, a sales representative for Kia West Edmonton. She believes that being in Alberta also makes a big difference, and according to Fardy, the recession hasn’t affected the Kia booth at all.

“We don’t really see much of a recession.”

The Toyota booth also experienced a busy showing.

“If compared to a previous year, I think it’s even busier than it’s been,” said Michael Kopp, a product adviser from Sherwood Park Toyota. “We’re loving it at the Toyota booth, it’s constantly busy.” He believes that due to the recession, people look more closely at the quality of a new vehicle when purchasing.

“I’ve never seen a better time to buy a car than now,” said Bob Vilas, executive director of the Edmonton Motor Dealers Association. “If you are in the market, what a great time to do it.”

Jesse and Heather Cole were at the show browsing and to check out what was new.

“I think we’d be more likely to buy a car now,” said Jesse. “They’re cheaper because of the recession.”

Both said it was interesting to see the different marketing strategies as a result of the recession.

“I think it’s exciting seeing some of the new things that they’re doing to try and make us buy,” Heather said.
