HALIFAX – An official with the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources says two salvage companies will travel to Scatarie Island next month to assess the potential removal of a stranded bulk carrier.
The MV Miner broke its line and ran aground off Cape Breton last September as it was being towed from Montreal to Turkey, where it was to be scrapped.
Russell MacKinlay, the department’s acting director of operations, says Bennington Group of New York and Armada Offshore of Turkey will examine the site in mid-February to determine how best to remove the vessel.
MacKinlay says provincial officials will also travel to the island to oversee the visit.
The companies are working on an agreement with the provincial and federal governments for the removal of the vessel.
MacKinlay says the ship remains in one piece despite several large holes in its side caused by storms last fall.
