SASKATOON - The University of Saskatchewan's president is defending its decision to turn down a $500,000 donation to fund scholarships for non-aboriginal students.

Peter MacKinnon told a radio talk show that accepting the money would have flown in the face of policy, which seeks to increase the number of aboriginal students.

He says it would have been "discordant" to say the university was pleased to get money for scholarships that would specifically exclude aboriginals.

The donor has argued that there's already enough scholarship funding specifically for aboriginal students.
