Staff and students at a Vancouver school are rallying around the family of a popular student who lost everything to a devastating house fire last Wednesday.

Several departments at Vancouver Technical Secondary School held fundraisers yesterday for the family of Grade 12 student Romdoul Long, who is also the student council president.

"It’s so overwhelming. I’ve never had this much attention in my life," Long said yesterday. "I hate all the attention, but I love my family and if this will help them then it’s something I can deal with."

The seven-member family has spent the last week trying to find a new home with limited success, Long added.

"There’s a lot of us and most places are already taken because it is the beginning of the month," she said

K. Ramona Orr, head of the school’s drama department, said her students took initiative to help the Longs.

"Every year at this time we do a series of one-act plays and they suggested we donate a portion of our proceeds to the family," she said.

Orr added the "sharp and witty" performances would be running as matinees until tomorrow and are open to the public.
