Schools can keep private daycare deals: Premier

Ontario won’t force its school boards to cancel deals with private daycare providers as they try to roll out the government’s ambitious full-day learning plan, Premier Dalton McGuinty said yesterday.

Ontario won’t force its school boards to cancel deals with private daycare providers as they try to roll out the government’s ambitious full-day learning plan, Premier Dalton McGuinty said yesterday.

Rather than kick out groups that are already providing before- and after-school care, school boards will be able to keep them if they don’t want to set up their own extended day programs, he said.

But those third-party groups will have to use the government’s curriculum and provide care “on site” in schools, the premier added.

McGuinty was forced to clarify his plans amid reports that his government was about to scrap plans for boards to run the extended day programs.

But extended day programs will only be offered in schools where there is sufficient parental demand, McGuinty said yesterday.
