Schools seek to dodge pest invasion

After reports a University of Calgary residence had been infested with bedbugs, other post-secondary institutions in town admit precautions have been taken to prevent the spread of the pesky critters.

Mount Royal University had one confirmed case of bedbugs in an on-campus townhouse earlier this semester, said Natasha Reynolds, assistant manager of residence services.

She recalled one student moving out of the townhouse and exterminators spraying the residence multiple times.

“We hadn’t had reports of bedbugs for two years, so we didn’t anticipate anything major,” Reynolds said.

At SAIT, residence staff underwent training specifically regarding bedbugs last week and have procedures in place should an outbreak occur, said spokesperson Heidi Sparks.

“There is a notice being produced that’s going to be put up in our residences to help educate students on bedbugs,” she added.

U of C officials were once again not available for comment yesterday.
